Jiapeng Liu performing cello

Biography

Chinese cellist Jiapeng Liu is praised for his "warm, exquisite tone, nuanced phrasing, and virtuoso technique." He is the First Prize winner of the Hunan International Wind and String Festival, and Second Prize winner in the Romantic Category at the American Virtuoso International Music Competition.

An active performer and chamber musician, he has taken master classes with distinguished artists including Colin Carr, Yosif Feigelson, and Markus Stocker. His orchestral experience includes four years with the Oriental Symphony Orchestra during his undergraduate studies and performances with the Xiaoxiang Philharmonic Orchestra. He currently serves as principal cellist of the UNT Baroque Orchestra. In January 2026, Jiapeng will make his Carnegie Hall debut.

Jiapeng holds a Master of Music from the University of North Texas, where he studied modern cello with Horacio Contreras and Baroque cello with Sydney ZumMallen. He previously earned his Bachelor of Music degree from Wuhan Conservatory of Music under the tutelage of Associate Professor Yan Tang. Currently, he is pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts at the Moores School of Music, University of Houston, as a student of Dr. Eunghee Cho.
